Creel Surveys Funded for Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis

Creel Survey

Thanks to the funding support from the Fish and Wildlife Enhancement Fund, MWF will be taking a closer look at two important lakes in the province—Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis—through creel surveys that aim to better understand recreational angling on these waters.

Lake Manitoba has seen a noticeable uptick in recreational fishing activity, which naturally brings added angling pressure. With more rods in the water, it is important we understand what is being caught, how long people are fishing, and what they are keeping. That’s why MWF is partnering with the Manitoba Fisheries team to roll out a full creel survey on Lake Manitoba. Surveys will take place at key access points during both the open water and ice fishing seasons. Creel clerks will be out chatting with anglers, collecting info like time spent fishing, bait used, catch details, and harvest numbers.

This kind of data isn’t just numbers—it’s critical for long-term fishery management. It helps us ensure this lake continues to thrive for future generations of anglers.

Meanwhile, on Lake Winnipegosis, we are launching a pilot creel survey to see if a full-scale study is worthwhile. The pilot will help determine if there’s consistent recreational fishing activity year-round. We will also be connecting with local lodges and outfitters to tap into their knowledge of the lake’s angling history and trends.

Both lakes are commercially fished, which makes it even more important to understand the full picture—including how much recreational pressure they are under. Good data leads to good management, and good management means healthy, sustainable fisheries for everyone.

Special thanks to the Fish and Wildlife Enhancement Fund for this grant support.
