Following a press conference on August 23, where Bloodvein First Nation announced its intent to physically block licensed non-Indigenous hunters, anglers, and trappers from accessing unoccupied Crown lands near their community, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is calling on the province to intervene.
As the voice of Manitoba’s licensed hunters and anglers, MWF is deeply concerned by what it views as an unlawful blockade that risks increasing division rather than fostering healthy collaboration and the sharing of resources. CBC’s Marjorie Dowhos sat down with MWF Senior Policy Advisor Chris Heald to discuss the legal, conservation, and safety implications of the Bloodvein decision—and why the Federation is urging the provincial government to provide leadership, transparency, science-based solutions, and additional enforcement in the area.
