For the third time in two years, the Manitoba government has imposed last-minute changes to hunting regulations for licensed hunters – continuing a troubling pattern of knee-jerk decisions in response to pressure tactics.
Following the opening of the 2025 hunting season, licensed non-Indigenous hunters are now banned from hunting within 500 meters on either side of:
- Rice River Road (within GHA 17B), connecting Bloodvein First Nation to Berens River First Nation
- The banks of the Bloodvein River and Namay Falls, extending to the border of GHAs 17, 17A, and 17B
The Premier’s decision comes in response to an illegal blockade, and the result is less access for Manitobans to our Crown Lands and resources.
While the MWF’s efforts have helped remove this illegal blockade to allow licensed hunters to travel on the highway, we remained concerned that hunters who were issued licenses were not consulted before this decision was made.
What is next? MWF believes we can expect more pressure tactics, and the continued erosion of access to our public land and resources – including fish, wildlife, minerals, forests and park lands – which makes up 83% of our province.
