MWF Launches Court Action to Challenge Government Regulations, Land Claims and Blockades

Court

The Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF) announced today a three-pronged response to recent actions by the province and First nations seeking to exclude licensed hunters and anglers from public land. The MWF will be:

  • Seeking to defend the interests of licensed hunters in a court action launched by Misipawistik Cree Nation (MCN) seeking an end to licensed moose hunting in GHAs 10, 15 and 15A;
  • Challenging recent provincial regulations and an illegal blockade by Bloodvein First Nation excluding licensed hunters and anglers from public land; and
  • Appealing a decision of the Court of King’s Bench supporting the provincial government’s decision to reduce moose hunting licenses by 75% after publishing and accepting applications for the 2024 big game draw.

The MWF is witnessing an unprecedented attack on the tradition of licensed hunting and fishing in Manitoba through arbitrary reductions in big game tags, exclusion zones that prevent licensed hunters and anglers from accessing public land, and illegal blockades that turn licensed hunters and anglers away.

MWF continues to promote its vision for a management approach where the province manages wildlife for all Manitobans, setting harvest limits based on sound science and sustaining healthy populations, and all Manitobans are allowed to enjoy our outdoor spaces.
