Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF) has once again written to the Mayor of Winnipeg and City Councillors, questioning the City of Winnipeg and Winnipeg Police Services participation, in the federal government’s firearm buyback program. Recent developments show that support across the nation is further eroding for this program, including the Yukon, which has joined Alberta in openly refusing to take part. In addition, Saskatchewan recently introduced amendments to The Saskatchewan Firearms Act to ensure firearm owners receive fair compensation. The City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Police Service now remain the only jurisdiction in Canada openly supporting the firearm buyback program.
Last week, the federal government also added to the ever-expanding number of prohibited firearms by amending the Order in Council to include semi-automatic firearms with a detachable magazine. Utilizing “expert panels” to determine which firearms should be included on the prohibited list.
