MWF Appears Before Chief Justice Joyal to Defend Interests of Licensed Hunters

Law Courts

MWF staff and legal counsel appeared before Chief Justice Joyal of the Court of King’s Bench last Monday, March 9th. MWF presented its application to be added as a Party or as an Intervenor in this lawsuit launched by Misipawistik Cree Nation (MCN) seeking a prohibition of licensed moose hunting in Game Hunting Area (GHA)s 10, 15 and 15A.

MWF was also asking the Court whether it is appropriate that Legal Aid – funded by provincial taxpayers and intended to support low-income Manitobans – should be providing free legal resources to advance MCN’s attempt to end licensed hunting.

Chief Justice Joyal heard our arguments and reserved his decision on both of these preliminary matters. The trial on the main issue of the future of licensed moose hunting in these GHAs is scheduled to take place in 2027.
