Supreme Court of Canada to Hear Challenge on Federal Firearms Ban

On March 19, 2026, the Supreme Court of Canada agreed to hear a challenge to the Liberal government’s ban on certain firearms models and variants – firearms the government considers suitable only for the battlefield, not for hunting or sport shooting. Many of these firearms, however, are specifically designed and widely used for hunting and sporting purposes.

The federal government first banned the sale, use, and importation of 1,500 firearms in May 2020, a list that has since grown to more than 2,500 firearms and their variants. These firearms are labeled as “assault-style,” a term that remains ambiguous and carries no legal definition in Canada.

The Manitoba Wildlife Federation supports measures to halt this costly and ineffective legislation, which recent estimates suggest has already cost Canadian taxpayers over one billion dollars.
