The Manitoba Wildlife Federation is raising concerns about the potential transfer of Wildlife Management Area (WMA) lands to Peguis First Nation through the Treaty Land Entitlement (TLE) process. While MWF fully supports resolving outstanding TLE obligations, we believe WMAs were established to protect important wildlife habitat while remaining accessible to all Manitobans.
MWF’s concerns were recently highlighted in an interview with the Winnipeg Sun, as questions continue to be raised about the potential transfer of these publicly accessible conservation lands. We have also written to the Minister of Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures requesting maps to identify the specific parcels being considered within WMAs, their legal designation and history, and whether they are eligible for transfer under the TLE Framework Agreement.
WMAs are an important part of Manitoba’s conservation legacy, providing habitat for wildlife while supporting hunting, fishing, trapping and other outdoor recreation. MWF believes these lands should remain protected and accessible for the benefit of wildlife and future generations.
