Manitoba Wildlife Federation staff joined Graeme Crawford, owner, and operator of Point Proven Kennels for a day of bird dog training. Graeme is one of the most passionate people we have ever worked with. His excitement for training is only surpassed by his love for his dogs. Graeme has been involved with bird dog training for over 15 years, staring when he was 20, owning and training 10 dogs in that time. Mostly focusing on Irish red setters and English pointers, Graeme has recently started working with labs as his retrieving dogs for waterfowl. Graeme travels across Canada and the into the United States annually, working with other trainers.
This year marks Graeme’s 12th year in the Dakotas working along side his training mentor from Louisiana. In total Graeme spends 3 weeks to a month in the United States each year. Given Graeme’s dedication to his craft, all of his dogs are trained to the highest level of competition standards. An avid hunter, summer training is all done in preparation for the fall hunting season. Graeme targets upland game birds such as sharptailed grouse through the use of his pointing dogs and waterfowl with his retrieving dogs. In addition to training and hunting with his own dogs, Graeme also owns and operates Artemis Pet Resort, a dog boarding and grooming business. Accepting up to 5 dogs with length of stays ranging from one night to as long as 3 months. The name Artemis stems from the Greek goddess of wild animals, the hunt and vegetation. Graeme describes Artemis as a fun, active environment, a vacation for dogs when their owners are on vacation.
