Introductory Paddling Program — Kayak and SUP

Whether you are a new kayak/SUP owner or simply want to build a strong foundation of paddling skills to prepare you for a lifetime of paddling adventures, this introductory program is for you. 

This experience will combine skill development and practical paddling skills on a slow, meandering river in LaSalle, Manitoba. After a thorough introduction on shore, paddlers will launch their kayaks/SUPs onto the water and paddling techniques will be taught throughout the day. 

The participants will be split into two groups so everyone will have a chance to experience kayaking and SUP in one course. The groups will switch watercrafts at the lunch break and continue on the water for the second session. 

Kayak course curriculum: 


  • Boat features and proper fitting 
  • Required safety equipment 
  • Dryland exit procedure 
  • Paddle features and grip 
  • Basic forward stroke 

On water: 

  • Controlled shore entry 
  • Boat balance 
  • Efficient forward stroke 
  • Foot-controlled rudder operation 
  • Sweep stroke 
  • Controlled shore exit 

SUP course curriculum: 


  • SUP equipment (board types, features, parts, paddles, leashes, fin systems)
  • Required safety equipment
  • Entry and exits
  • Body positioning
  • Forward stroke
  • Turning strokes 

On water: 

  • Controlled entry and exits
  • Body positioning (prone, kneeling, standing)
  • Falling and getting back on board
  • Forward Power stroke
  • Sweep stroke
  • Draw stroke
  • Towel


10:00 to 12:00 Group 1: Kayak skills (west route)
10:00 to 12:00 Group 2: SUP skills (east route)
12:00 to 12:30 Lunch break
12:30 to 14:30 Group 1: SUP skills (east route)
12:30 to 14:30 Group 2: Kayak skills (west route) 

Personal items to bring with you: 

  • Light, packable lunch and snacks to keep your energy up 
  • At least two bottles of water 
  • Hat and sunglasses 
  • Sunscreen & lip balm 
  • Footwear that you don’t mind getting wet / dirty 
  • Clothing to suit the weather conditions 
  • Change of clothes & footwear for the ride home 
  • Waterproof camera (optional) 
  • Sense of Adventure – Mandatory! 

How to get there: 

From the South perimeter, head south on Hwy 330 to La Salle 

After crossing the bridge, turn right on First Street 

Cross the railway tracks and turn right on DeGagne St. 

Head North, just past the community mailboxes and down the small hill to the boat launch. 

Park on the side so that the boat launch is not impeded

Prerequisite: None. Each participant should be comfortable in and around water 

All equipment (kayak, SUP, paddles, PFD, safety equipment) is provided 

Min: 8 / Max: 12 participants 

Cost: $100 / person (excluding gratuities)
