Dear valued member,
As most of you are likely aware, the COVID-19 virus has been labelled a global pandemic. As such, the Province of Manitoba has suggested that one of the ways to prevent infection is to “reduce large group and crowded activities.” The MWF board and staff have made the hard decision to cancel the upcoming Annual General Meeting and Wild at Heart fundraising dinner as the health and well being of our members and attendees is paramount for the MWF. We will be meeting over the next few weeks and will come up with a plan to communicate all the relevant information you would have been provided at our AGM. We are extremely grateful for your understanding and patience as we work out all the details. This is uncharted territory for us all.
Our annual Wild at Heart fundraising dinner will be rescheduled to sept 26. We certainly hope the current situation is long resolved by then and we can all enjoy a fun evening together. If you have already purchased your banquet tickets, we hope that you are willing and able to join us on September 26th, otherwise we are of course happy to provide refunds for tickets sold.

On behalf of the executive committee and staff please stay safe and we will be in touch very soon
Join us in celebrating the wild spirit of Manitoba and our outdoor heritage at Manitoba’s premier outdoors gala!
The theme of this year’s Wild at Heart banquet is Lake Winnipeg. It has become clear that over the last 50 years the Lake Winnipeg Fishery has suffered due to the lack of proper fisheries management. All stakeholders have deep investments in the resource and the loss of the fishery could have substantial implications on their livelihoods, traditions, businesses or means of sustenance. One of the largest implications, and one that has become front and center with our current government, is the implications a fisheries crash could and would have on our provincial economy. In 2018, the MWF with our partners conducted a research study on the economic value of Lake Winnipeg’s Walleye Fishery. Over a two-year span, this incredible fishery has lured 100,000 anglers to take in Lake Winnipeg’s exceptional fishing opportunities, generating $102 million in net economic activity in Manitoba. MWF sees a parallel relationship between the fisheries economy and the science that supports its sustainability. Going forward, MWF and our valued partners are advocating to ensure the government fulfills their commitment for a second round buy back quota, as well we are advocating for adequate research, science and management to sustain a healthy fishery. MWF is also excited to launch a Lake Winnipeg angler access initiative. Here, we are working with partner groups and the RM of St. Andrews to ensure the access points to the lake are cleared and reports on ice fishing access and ice depths are current and accessible to anglers on the MWF website. While Lake Winnipeg has been a major focus, MWF wants to see all fisheries in this province sustainably managed so that future generations of anglers can enjoy this incredible fishery.
All funds raised from this amazing event are used to fund hunter and angler recruitment and retention, educational programming as well as the MWF’s important conservation and wildlife policy work which includes addressing Manitoba’s big game species, Lake Winnipeg Walleye, Chronic Wasting Disease, Spotlighting and many many other initiatives that we and our members are so passionate about.
Each year the Wild at Heart fundraising banquet includes great food, great times with fellow hunters and anglers, amazing prizes to be won and a spectacular live auction. Don’t miss out this year!
