The Manitoba Wildlife Federation is pleased to learn today that the Province of Manitoba is taking significant steps to enhancing the sustainability of the fishery on Lake Winnipeg. This includes a commercial quota buy-back program and a 30-day consultation period with various fishers (anglers and commercial) focussed on a proposed minimum mesh size as well as changes to angling regulations. The press release also commits to a collaborative science and adaptive management workshop between the government, angling groups, commercial fishers, indigenous fishers and the tourism sector. This is something that both MWF and commercial fishers have been asking for.
